Olympic Development Program

Olympic Development Program

If you are involved with competitive soccer, or know someone who is, you have probably heard of ODP, but you might not know exactly what it is all about. You might be wondering if ODP would be a good fit for your player. Please keep reading to find out more about the Olympic Development Program.

Founded in 1977, the Olympic Development Program is organized by US Youth Soccer and each individual state soccer association (www.coloradosoccer.org). The ODP mission is to “identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.”

The US is broken into four Regions from which players are selected. The regions include the East Region, South Region, Midwest Region, and West Region. Colorado is located in the West Region along with: Alaska, Arizona, California North, California South, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Every year each state will conduct a selection process to form a State Team that will then compete against the teams from other states. Region Teams are selected from the best players from the State Teams. These teams will compete against the other regions in the United States, in a national championship and around the world in tournaments and training opportunities.

Much has changed in youth soccer since the start of ODP back in 1977 and although it is no longer the main pathway to the US Men’s or Women’s National Teams, it still has much to offer youth players. There are many opportunities for young players to grow their game and ODP is just one of many avenues a player may utilize. Colorado ODP involves six age groups. This season the program starts with players born in 2007 and goes through players born in 2002. The tryouts for these age groups have already begun this summer.
